Okay, so I went back and watched all the Black Rose duels, and as it turns out, yes, there are people added to the coffins that fall and burn at the end of each duel, and they’re all really quick, blink and you miss it, scary moments. I guess I’ll also throw a bit of speculation for each coffin, while I’m at it.
1.) Episode 14’s/Kanae coffin has a pretty average looking guy laying in there, nothing really all that significant, other than the fact that maybe his plain appearance is supposed to be similar to how Kanae is a fairly plain character in comparison to the rest, and not expected to be of duelist material?
2.) Episode 15’s/Kozue is a pretty obvious one: apparent twins with blue hair. They’re holding hands, and jammed in there fairly tightly. They might be holding hands as a symbolic representation of trying to keep a bond together, even though torments such as metaphorically having the bond burned/forced apart. This interpretation is probably the most pulled out of my ass out of any of these, because this one still freaks me out the most.
3.) Episode 17’s/Shiori isn’t too terribly interesting, other than the boy having Shiori’s exact hair color and haircut, in addition to having what appears to be a dead flower on his chest, possibly indicative of manipulation or miracles dying. This could be so as, though not the same flower, Shiori gave Juri a flower to implant hope of miracles within Juri, and to start more serious manipulation, perhaps.
4.) Episode 18’s/Mitsuru is a pretty simple one with a blonde child in the coffin. The only thing of note here are the adult sized shoes on top of the child, which are clearly too large for him to wear, most likely representing Mitsuru’s want to fit his ideals of an adult.
5.) Episode 20’s/Wakaba is the very last one, and has Wakaba’s bang style, in addition to the golden leaf that Saionji was going to give to her, but gave to Anthy instead. This one probably isn’t all that symbolic, since we see Mikage drop a gold leaf right before this shot, so that’s probably where that comes from.
There isn’t a coffin shot for Episode 21/Keiko, since there wasn’t a shot of the coffin sliding in before being burned in the first place, which COULD be interpreted as Keiko being given very little attention and significance, but this was probably more of a time saving tactic carried over from the original. Yet again, these interpretations are what I personally get from looking at these creepy shots. There’s probably other ways to look at each of these. And now you are all aware of each of these alterations that appear in at least the remastered boxsets, which I noticed not many knew of. The more you know.
Those two definitely weren’t in the coffin for the original release/TV broadcasting. That thing was empty, but with those guys in there, that’s just CREEPY. Now I’m also really curious if the remasterings changed any other things, or if this was the only change.
I think a re-watch is in order for the second and third boxsets, because when I watched the first boxset with someone, upon introducing them to the series, I certainly did not catch any alterations made. Maybe they were really small if they were there.
